Canada is making a significant move to ban all products containing asbestos by 2018. This ban will include banning construction materials and brake pads.
It is almost been a decade that Canada closed its asbestos mines but it had hindered efforts on the international level to list the cancer-causing agent as a hazardous substance.
But according to the Science Minister Kirsty Duncan (as she mentioned in the The Big Story post): in the next Rotterdam Convention, an international treaty with more than 150 countries that support listing asbestos under hazardous substances.
In the year 1987, WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer had declared asbestos as a human carcinogen, a cancer-causing agent. Jane Philpott, the Health Minister admitted that asbestos related cancers still affect a lot of Canadian families and thus they would be supporting a ban on all products containing asbestos for the health and safety of all Canadians.
